  • Collect your baggageCollect your checked baggage and confirm that you have your belongings before proceeding through customs.
  • Complete the customs declarationSubmit the required declaration for accompanied and unaccompanied articles. Japan Customs recommends electronic declaration using Visit Japan Web.
  • Check documents issued during landingBefore leaving the arrival area, check the passport and any residence-related documents issued or annotated during the landing process.

Practical notes

  • Visit Japan Web is an official Digital Agency service for arrival procedures including immigration and customs.
  • Electronic customs declaration does not prevent Japan Customs from inspecting baggage when required.
  • For medium-to-long-term residents, residence-card issuance at arrival depends on the port of entry. At other ports, the card is generally issued later after the required residence-address notification.
  • Address registration after establishing a residence in Japan is a separate procedure and will be covered in the next JMNET step.
