Register your address
Register your place of residence with the municipal office after establishing where you will live in Japan.
Overview
Newly landed medium-to-long-term residents must notify the municipal office responsible for their place of residence within 14 days after establishing that residence. Bring your residence card, or your passport if your residence card is to be issued later.

- Establish your place of residenceThe notification period is based on when you establish your place of residence in Japan. For a newly landed medium-to-long-term resident, the notification must be made within 14 days after establishing that residence.
- Visit the municipal office for your residenceSubmit the residence notification at the municipal office responsible for the place where you live.
Documents and items
- Residence cardBring your residence card when submitting the notification if one was issued to you at your port of entry.
- Passport when the residence card will be issued laterIf your passport contains a notation indicating that your residence card will be issued later, bring that passport instead for this procedure.
- Family-relationship documentation where applicableIf you live in Japan with family members, the Immigration Services Agency's newcomer guidance states that documentation proving the family relationship may be needed. Confirm the documents required by your municipality.

- Go to your municipal officeVisit the municipal office responsible for your established place of residence.
- Submit the moving-in and residence notificationComplete the applicable municipal moving-in procedure and notify your place of residence. When a medium-to-long-term resident presents the residence card and completes the applicable Basic Resident Registration notification, the residence notification under the immigration residence-management system can be handled together with it.
- Check your registered addressConfirm that the residence information recorded through the procedure is correct before considering the registration complete.
